After a long winter it’s wonderful to feel the warm sunshine, watch the snow banks recede and see the spring flowers begin to bloom. The days become longer and soon it’s summer. The beaches draw us like iron to a magnet. Campfires dot the wilderness expanses like fireflies. The cold, icy days of winter are all but forgotten. Spring and summer are wonderful times of the year, but the best season of all is autumn. Perfect weather, beautiful scenery and the year's best sporting activities are what it takes to set the fall months apart and make it by far the greatest time of the year.
Autumn days are perfect. The temperature hovers in the seventies and eighties and the nights provide ideal sleeping conditions a few degrees cooler. There is a clean crispness to the air that makes breathing easy. The dancing breezes carry the tantalizing scent of harvest and late blooming flowers. In the evening you can occasionally catch the calming odor of a wood fire chasing the slight chill from some one’s home. Air conditioners are no longer necessary. The muggy oppressive heat that haunts the summer months is gone. The stale, spore infested, recycled air is replaced by a soothing breeze from the open windows. Black flies and mosquitoes are a thing of the past. You are free to roam unmolested in the glorious outdoors.
The heavenly weather conditions are made even better by the incredible artwork nature paints in the autumn months. Fields of corn, acres of blaze orange pumpkins and orchards brimming with bright red apples are everywhere. The lakes and ponds acquire a special gleam as they ripple under the northern breezes. Horses gallop and play like children in an endless expanse of green and gold. For miles in every direction the leaves become a tapestry. Red, orange, yellow, green, purple; God’s handiwork is beautiful beyond fathoming. Above the hypnotizing beauty of the autumn foliage, flocks of ducks and geese gracefully slice through the powder blue sky. Nature’s majesty is endless.
There is no better way to enjoy the perfect weather and astonishing scenery than to be outside in it. Deer and partridge season opens. The frosty mornings lure sleepy hunters by the hundreds into the open air. High school students greet another school year on the football and soccer fields. Golfers spend luxurious evenings and weekends chasing the elusive par from hole to hole. Back yards ring with the clang of horseshoes and laughter of friends. Radios and televisions hold captive audiences as the Red Sox charge toward another pennant and the Patriots gear up for another season of domination. Boats filled with fisherman lazily float across the glassine waterways. Hikers flock to the trails for look at natures wonders from on high.
Autumn is the best time of the year, but its days are bittersweet. In the back of each of our minds we know that all too soon old man winter will be upon us. At times we are tempted to throw ourselves with frenzy into each day, trying to leach every precious drop from the passing utopia. The leaves begin to fall; the air now carries a bite and a reminder….. You’ll have to wait another nine months before the soul enriching days of autumn come again.

I'll take it for its flair, clarity, organization--though I'm never happy when an essay has somewhat generic details. I mean, for example, you've climbed Borestone Mt 396 times and no doubt have seen a lot of the stuff in graf 3 yourself, but for all we know you could be living in Hawaii and stripping those details off a coffeetable book about life in New England.....
